Community Standards
The Gen exists so that transgender, non-binary, gender-questioning and gender-exploring people have somewhere to meet, talk and be understood without having to explain themselves first. These standards are what keep it that way.
They apply everywhere on The Gen: profiles, Mixers, chat, calls and sessions with Pros.
What we expect
Assume good faith. People arrive at different points in their journey. Someone asking a question you find basic is learning. Meet them where they are.
Respect how people identify. Use the name and pronouns someone gives you. Getting it wrong happens; correcting yourself and moving on is all that’s needed. Refusing to, or making a point of it, is not.
Keep what’s shared here, here. People say things on The Gen they may not have said anywhere else. Don’t screenshot, repost or repeat someone’s private conversation elsewhere.
Take no for an answer. If someone ends a conversation, declines a request or doesn’t reply, that’s their answer.
What isn’t allowed
- Harassment and bullying: repeated unwanted contact, pile-ons, insults, intimidation
- Hate speech: attacking or demeaning anyone for their gender identity, gender history, sexuality, race, ethnicity, religion, disability or any other characteristic
- Transphobia in any form, including questioning whether someone is “really” trans, demanding proof, or treating anyone’s identity as a debate
- Sexual harassment: unsolicited sexual messages or images, fetishising someone’s identity or body, persistent sexual pressure
- Threats and violence, including threats made in anger or as a joke
- Doxxing: sharing anyone’s real name, address, workplace, or other identifying details without their consent
- Impersonation: pretending to be another person, or misrepresenting yourself to gain trust
- Outing: revealing that someone is trans, or details of their transition, to anyone
- Spam, scams and solicitation, including promoting products, services or other platforms
- Content involving minors. The Gen is strictly for adults aged 18 and over. Any sexual content involving a minor is reported to the authorities.
- Recording others without consent. Do not record, screenshot or photograph a call or conversation without the other person’s clear agreement.
- Requests for medical, legal or financial advice from other members. People here share experience, not professional advice. See below.
Lived experience is not professional advice
Members, including Pros, share what happened to them and what helped. That is genuinely valuable and it is not the same as clinical, legal or financial advice.
Nobody on The Gen, including Pros, should be advising you on hormones, dosages, blockers, surgery, providers or referrals, interpreting your test results, or telling you what to do about a legal or financial matter. If someone does, please report it. It isn’t allowed, and it isn’t safe.
Pros are not medical, therapeutic, counselling or legal professionals. They are experienced community members offering conversation.
Reporting
If something is wrong, tell us.
In the app: open the profile, message or conversation, and select Report. You can report and block at the same time. Blocking takes effect immediately, and the person is not told.
By email: support@thegen.app.
Tell us what happened, who was involved and roughly when. Screenshots help but aren’t required.
What happens next. We review every report and aim to respond within 24 hours. We may issue a warning, remove content, restrict what an account can do, or remove someone permanently. We may not always be able to tell you the outcome, but every report is read, and reporting is the single most useful thing you can do to keep this community safe.
You will never be penalised for reporting in good faith.
If you or someone else is in danger
The Gen is not an emergency or crisis service, and we cannot provide urgent help.
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services. In the UK, call 999.
For mental health crisis support in the UK:
- Samaritans: 116 123, free, 24 hours a day
- Shout: text SHOUT to 85258, free, 24 hours a day
- Switchboard LGBT+ Helpline: 0800 0119 100
If you’re outside the UK, please contact your local emergency or crisis service.
When we remove someone
We’d rather help someone do better than remove them, and most issues end with a conversation. But we will remove an account immediately and without warning for threats of violence, sexual content involving minors, doxxing, or anything that puts a member’s physical safety at risk.
Removal is permanent. Creating a new account after removal is not allowed.
Changes
We’ll update these standards as The Gen grows, and we’ll say when we do.
