Privacy Policy
Last updated: 11 August 2026
This policy explains how Convo & Co UK Limited (“we”, “us”) collects and uses your personal information when you use The Gen app and our website. The Gen is a verified community app for transgender, non-binary, gender-questioning and gender-exploring adults, and we hold information about our members to a correspondingly high standard of care.
Convo & Co UK Limited is registered in England and Wales (company number 16149773), C/O Delta House Limited, Phoenix Business Centre, Rosslyn Crescent, Harrow, Middlesex, England, HA1 2SP. We are the data controller for the information described here.
Who The Gen is for
The Gen is for adults aged 18 or over. Every member completes identity and age verification before joining. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18, and we remove accounts that fail age verification.
The information we collect
Account and profile information. Your name, email address, date of birth, username, and, if you choose to add them, a phone number, profile photos, cover photo, gallery images, interests, pronouns and profile details.
Gender identity. The Gen exists for a specific community, and your profile may describe your gender identity. This is special category data under UK data protection law. We process it only with your explicit consent, given when you create your profile, and you can amend or remove it at any time in the app. We never use it for advertising and we never sell it.
Identity verification (KYC). To keep the community verified and adults-only, every member completes identity verification through our verification partner, Shufti Pro. This involves your identity document and a selfie. Verification records are held securely and are subject to a specific retention rule described below.
Content you create. Messages you send, including text, voice notes, photos, videos, audio and file attachments; content you share in Mixer conversations; and anything you add to your profile. Chat and calls are delivered through our communications partner, Stream. Live voice and video calls are not recorded and not transcribed.
Purchases. If you subscribe, billing is handled by Google Play or the Apple App Store and our subscription partner, RevenueCat. If you book a session with a Pro, payment is processed by Stripe. We receive records of your purchases; we do not receive or store your full card details.
How you use the app, and your device. App interactions and feature usage, crash and performance data, device identifiers and push notification tokens. We use Google Firebase and Google Analytics for analytics, and OneSignal for notifications.
How we use it
We use your information to run the service: creating and verifying your account, matching you with compatible members, delivering messages and calls, processing subscriptions and bookings, sending service notifications, keeping the community safe, preventing fraud and abuse, and improving the app. We will only send you marketing if you have opted in, and you can opt out at any time.
Our legal bases
We rely on: contract (providing the service you signed up for); explicit consent (your gender identity and other special category information in your profile); legal obligation (identity verification and associated record-keeping); and legitimate interests (keeping the service safe, preventing fraud, and understanding how the app is used, always balanced against your rights).
Who we share it with
We share personal information only with the service providers who help us run The Gen, each acting under contract on our instructions:
- Shufti Pro: identity and age verification
- Stream: chat messaging and voice/video calls
- RevenueCat, Google Play and the Apple App Store: subscriptions and billing
- Stripe: payments for Pro sessions
- Google (Firebase and Google Analytics): app analytics and crash reporting
- OneSignal: push notifications
- Amazon Web Services and MongoDB Atlas: secure hosting, storage and database services
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers. We may disclose information where the law requires it, for example to law enforcement under a valid legal request, or to protect the safety of our members.
Some of our providers process data outside the UK. Where they do, we rely on UK adequacy decisions or the UK International Data Transfer Agreement / standard contractual clauses to protect it.
How long we keep it
We keep your information for as long as you have an account, and then delete or anonymise it, with two exceptions:
- Identity verification records are kept after account deletion for a limited period, as required by our fraud-prevention and legal obligations. They are stored securely and used for no other purpose.
- Messages and attachments you have sent to other members exist in those members’ conversations, held by our chat provider. Deleting your account removes your profile and your media from our systems, but content you have already sent to others may persist in their conversations. We are working to extend deletion to this content.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account in the app (Settings → Delete Account) or request deletion at https://thegen.app/account-deletion/. You do not need the app installed to make the request. Deletion removes your profile, photos, and account data from our systems, subject to the retention rules above.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to access a copy of your information; to correct it; to erasure; to restrict or object to processing; to data portability; and to withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent. There is no charge, and we respond within one month.
To exercise any of these rights, email support@thegen.app.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk). We would appreciate the chance to resolve your concern first.
Security
All data is encrypted in transit. Identity documents and private media are stored in access-controlled storage and are not publicly accessible. We review access to our systems regularly and limit it to those who need it.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes, we will tell you in the app or by email before they take effect, and update the date at the top of this page.
